Delco United for Sensible Gun Policy kickoff draws crowd

Sep 23

Delaware County United for Sensible Gun Policy is Media, PA-based activist group which is working towards legislation to improve gun safety, inspired by the events in December 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The group held a standing-room only kickoff event this evening at the Media Borough Parlor room and included such guests as:

  • Bob McMahon, Mayor of Media Borough, member of Mayors against Illegal Guns
  • Mayor John Linder, Mayor of Chester, member of Mayors against Illegal Guns
  • Congressman Bob Brady
  • Francine Wheeler, mother of Ben, a boy killed at Sandy Hook on 12/14/2012
  • Movita Johnson-Harrell, mother of Charles, a boy killed in Lansdowne from gun violence
  • PA State Representative Ronald Waters
  • Former Congressman Joe Sestak

From Ms. Wheeler’s speech:

“It never crossed my mind, that my son would be shot and killed in his classroom. Gun violence is what happens to other people, not in Newtown, Connecticut. That’s what I thought. But there are so many people killed, so many kids killed. There is so much gun violence. There are 30,000 gun deaths in America each year. All of those mothers and fathers will wake up as I do, every morning, for the rest of our lives, missing our kids. And these very public tragedies, like the Navy Yard shooting, and Sandy Hook, get so much attention, but every day … we are losing so many kids and adults … to senseless gun violence.”
