Barry Sherwin

C. Barry Sherwin, 69, of Media, died suddenly Aug 29, 2011 at home. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he was a resident of Media for 40 years. Barry was a graduate of the Lindsey Military Academy in Wheeling West Virginia and received a degree in economics from University of Rhode Island. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army.

After having served in the Army, Barry held strong beliefs about US involvement, especially in Vietnam, and those beliefs led in shaping his views on government, politics and economics which he was not shy in sharing with anyone up for a good debate and contributed to his political activism. Barry first became known in the Media Community as a cab driver; he never gave up his dream of operating a cab or jitney service in Media. He was a community activist and organizer associated with SANE, served as President of the Media Fellowship House, was active with the Fair Housing Coalition and the Media Democratic Party.

He hosted a show on local cable TV, “Local News & Review” when it was still American Cablevision. Barry had worked in the banking community, as Executive Director of Community Services Organization in Philadelphia and most recently as a software programmer for City Steel in Claymont, Delaware.

Barry studied computers and established his own consulting business in software development. Following his retirement, he was a friendly face at the Deals Store in Media. Community organizer and activist don’t begin to describe Barry’s deep commitment and love for Media. He served for 20 years as an elected Borough Council Member, where he was part of the team of leaders dedicated to Media becoming the regional model of effective grassroots government and healthy economic development. Museums, a theater, shops, restaurants, award winning schools, commitment to the library, volunteer fire and ambulance corps, and diversity are all stronger because of citizens, like Barry, becoming engaged in their community.

Survivors: include his sons, Joshua ( Laurie) Sherwin of NY, NY, and David Sherwin of Media; a sister, Beverly Wissman of Mich, and grandchild, Claire Manning Sherwin.

Service: A gathering of friends will be held 11AM, Sun, Sept 18, 2011 at The Parlor of Media Borough, 3rd & Jackson Sts, Media. A time to share and remember will begin at 12 noon; bring pictures, stories and laughter.
